The Advanced Editions are significantly more challenging than the Standard Editions. They contain additional exercises and there are many more problem solving questions. These books have been aimed at students who are stronger and more gifted in Mathematics.
Each chapter has been carefully split up into all the important ideas relating to that particular major topic. After carefully reading through and understanding a chapter, the next stage is for the student to work through some of the revision exercises given at the end. These have been carefully graded into different levels of difficulty:
- Easier Questions: These questions given in level 1 (sometimes also in level 2) are intended to build up confidence. Most of the questions are almost identical to the examples given throughout the chapter except with the numbers changed. Reference page numbers are given.
- Average Questions: The questions in Level 2 and Level 3 are of average difficulty level, and will give all students (weak, average & gifted) a good opportunity to practice and consolidate the ideas and rules given throughout most of the chapter. All students should try to complete and understand the questions in the first 3 levels. Reference page numbers are given.
- Harder Questions: The questions in this level are more difficult as the numbers involved are larger, and some of the more difficult ideas in the topic are tested. Reference page numbers havent been included in the margin, in order to make students who reach this level more skillful in researching through the chapter for their own information.
- Problem Solving: This more difficult level has been included to challenge those students who are more gifted at Maths. Usually the questions are more sentence and problem oriented, and therefore they involve more reading and comprehension skills. It is unlikely that any of the questions in this level can be done mentally, because several different ideas, rules or steps are usually required.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
David Greenwood
David Greenwood is the Head of Mathematics at an Independent school in Melbourne and has 30 years' experience teaching mathematics from Years 7 to 12. He is the lead author for the Cambridge Essential Mathematics series and has authored more than 80+ titles for the Australian Curriculum and for the syllabuses of other states. He specialises in analysing curriculum and the sequencing of course content for school mathematics courses. He also has an interest in the use of technology for the teaching of mathematics.
Bryn Humberstone
Bryn Humberstone graduated from the University of Melbourne with an Honours degree in Pure Mathematics, and has taught secondary school mathematics for over 15 years. He has been a Head of Mathematics since 2014 at two independent schools in Victoria. Bryn is particularly passionate about designing engaging mathematical activities and effective assessment tasks for students with a variety of backgrounds and ability levels.
Justin Robinson
Justin Robinson is the inaugural Director of the Institute of Positive Education, based at Geelong Grammar School, where he leads a team of staff dedicated to promoting the theory and practice of Positive Education. Prior to this, he spent 20 years teaching mathematics, covering all levels of secondary education and with significant experience teaching VCE, IB and A-Levels. Justin is passionate about challenging students within a safe learning environment. Justin is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education, and was listed in The Educator’s 2017 ‘Top 50’ Hot List.
Jenny Goodman
Jenny Goodman has taught in schools for over 25 years and is currently teaching at a selective high school in Sydney. Jenny has an interest in the importance of literacy in mathematics education, and in teaching students of differing ability levels. She was awarded the Jones Medal for Education at Sydney University and the Bourke Prize for Mathematics.
Jennifer Vaughan
Jennifer Vaughan has taught secondary mathematics for over 30 years in New South Wales, Western Australia, Queensland and New Zealand and has tutored and lectured in mathematics at Queensland University of Technology. She is passionate about providing students of all ability levels with opportunities to understand and to have success in using mathematics. She has extensive experience in developing resources that make mathematical concepts more accessible, to develop student confidence, achievement and an enjoyment of maths.
Stuart Palmer
Stuart Palmer is a fully qualified high school mathematics teacher with more than 25 years’ experience teaching students from all walks of life in a variety of schools. He has been Head of Mathematics in two schools. He is very well known by teachers throughout the state for the professional learning workshops he delivers. Stuart also assists thousands of Year 12 students every year as they prepare for their HSC Examinations. At the University of Sydney, Stuart spent more than a decade running tutorials for pre-service mathematics teachers.
